If you have heard the expression "A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step" then the Legion Branch #23 Atom A Trappers winning the "American Cup" Championship in Lake Placid, New York this past weekend (Jan 31- Feb 2) has done just that!
The team started off strong with a 9-1 win in their first game. Their high spirits were short lived losing 7-3 to a strong team from Milton Massachusetts. Undeterred by their loss the team went on to win their next game 6-3. With a two and one record and a total of 18 goals this advantaged the team into the championship game. However, they would be left to face the same team from Milton who had defeated them earlier in the tournament.
After a scoreless first period the team from Massachusetts knew they were facing a different team this time around. The teams then exchanged a goal a piece in the second period making it 1-1. Setting the stage for what would be an exciting third period. After back and forth hockey and the Trappers killing off an astounding 9 power plays. They were now faced with their 10th with 23 seconds to go in regulation, leaving this young north bay team at a strong disadvantage going into overtime as the period ended in a 3-3 tie. During overtime, The Trappers were able to kill off the 4 on 3 disadvantage. The Trappers would then score what they thought would be the winning goal. However, after a brief referee discussion the goal was overturned and the overtime period ended. Goalie, Hudson Wells came up big in the shootout saving all three shots he faced. While, Carson Godin scored the shootout winner. Leaving the Massachusetts bench in disbelief.
While this celebration may have only lasted a short while, the lesson of believing in yourself and never giving up is sure to last a lifetime.
