Novice AA Trappers continue winning ways
The West Ferris Novice AA Trappers are officially on a roll. The young team of 7 & 8 year olds followed up a gold medal performance 2 weeks ago in Timmins with a 3-2 win this past Sunday in the Championship game in the 28th Annual Sudbury 80’s hockey tournament. The team, which has only 1 loss in its last 11 games, has outscored their opponents 64/13 over this span.
Marshall McCharles opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the first game on Friday and the Trappers never looked back from there. This proved to be the game-winner as they posted a 4-0 win over a tough AA squad from Copper Cliff. Later in the day, they faced the top Novice team from the Sault and came away with a 4-1 win. Patrick Young scored the game-winner with a quick shot after a face-off win.
Saturday proved to be an up and down day for the Trappers. They came out firing on all cylinders and scored early and often in a 15-0 win against the Sudbury Bulldogs AA squad in morning action. Goalie Jackson Curran made some highlight reel saves early in the game to keep the momentum in the Trappers favour and some offense contributions from the Trappers corps of blue-liners made the difference. In the late game Saturday, the Trappers came out flat and allowed 2 quick goals, eventually dropping a 5-2 decision to a very tough Nickel City Jr. Sons AA squad.
Sunday’s championship game provided the Trappers with a rematch against Nickel City and the North Bay squad took full advantage of the opportunity, coming away with a 3-2 win. The game was played at a frantic pace and both teams had multiple scoring chances in what turned out to be a classic goaltending battle. Connor Filiatrault went the distance for the Trappers between the pipes to collect the win. Tyler Moore had a pair of goals to lead the Trappers, including the opening goal of the game on a fantastic individual effort. Nate “Dangles” Gravelle scored the game winning goal in the third period to cement the win.
